COLUMBIA, SC — Gov. Nikki Haley received an endorsement in her re-election bid Tuesday from a national small-business group.
The National Federation of Independent Business, which has about 4,000 members in South Carolina, backed the Republican from Lexington because backed business-tax cuts, damage-caps on lawsuits, better customer-service from state agencies, said Ben Homeyer, state director for NFIB in South Carolina. She announced the endorsement at Shealy Truck Center on Bluff Road in Columbia.
"Gov. Haley trusts the free enterprise system," Shealy President Bruce Shealy said.
Haley, whose family owned a clothing store where she started working as a teenager, understands the partnership between the private and public sectors, Shealy added.
"This is what happens when a governor listens to small business," he said.
Haley said she brought the same ethic she learned as a teenager handling her family business' accounting books to spend smartly and curb obstacles that cost money.
The NFIB endorsed Haley when she first ran for governor in 2010. The latest endorsement is Haley's first from a large trade group during the current campaign.
Her opponent, Democrat state Sen. Vincent Sheheen, has received backing from two state organizations -- S.C Educators Association and Conservation Voters of South Carolina.
Haley defeated Sheheen by 4.5 percentage points in the 2010 race.
